A Look Forward – Interior Design Color Trends for 2014

Even though we still have four months remaining in 2013, it is time to begin looking forward to what will be trendy in 2014!  Pantone has put out its predictions for color and home trends for 2014. My favorite by far is “Eccentricities.” According to http://www.pantone.com, “There is always room for an eccentric palette with a personality that defies the established “rule book” of design and color, bringing with it a sense of adventure, wit, experimentation and discovery. It’s “tongue in cheek” in attitude and highly original in color juxtapositioning and cleverly conceived in evocative combinations – a flash of neon green radiates off of zesty lemon or nectarine combines with a daredevil Skydiver blue. Fudgesickle brown is rendered sweeter with Strawberry Ice. A warm red coexists with its cooler counterpart, while black and/or white can be drawn into any combination.”

The Eccentricities color palate:

I love the juxtaposition of bright, contrasting colors that evokes almost a Warhol style. Using these bright colors in a design truly makes a space unforgettable and unique. However, going super bold can seem scary at first, so start with a neutral “canvas” and add as you go. Here is some design inspiration on how to incorporate the bold palate of Eccentricities into your space.

Emerald Inspiration

Pantone Inc. is a company that is based in Carlstadt, New Jersey and is best known for it’s color matching system which is used in a variety of industries including fashion, interior design, and printing. The color matching system is a color reproduction system which has made it much simpler to match any given color by its Pantone name.

Annually Pantone declares a particular color “Color of the Year”. Twice a year the company hosts a secretive meeting in varied European locations with representatives from various nations’ color standards groups. After two days of presentations and debate, they choose a color for the following year. It is reported that the color chosen connects with the defining mood for current era. According to Wikipedia, the press release declaring Honeysuckle the color of 2011 said “In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits. Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going – perfect to ward off the blues.” The results of the meeting are published in Pantone View ($750), which fashion designers, florists, and many other consumer-oriented companies purchase to help guide their designs and planning for future products.

Emerald Green was named the Color of the Year for 2013. Pantone describes its choice as “Lively. Radiant. Lush… A color of elegance and beauty that enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony.”

Personally, I love deep, rich jewel tones so I have been naturally drawn to Emerald Green. Take a look at some of these inspiring images of this lush color in varied uses.

A Visit to Jackson Pollock’s Studio in East Hampton

Last weekend I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Jackson Pollock’s studio was incredibly close to my house in East Hampton and that it had been converted into a museum. Venturing over about a half mile, I came upon a cute little cottage half hidden by shady trees. The small house and separate studio served as the get-away outpost for Jackson Pollock and his artist wife Lee Krasner.

The view that inspired many works by both artists.

Jackson is one of the 20th century’s most important artists and a major figure in the abstract impressionist movement. Pollock is probably best known for his technique referred to as the drip technique which he employed to meticulously create his iconic pieces. His techniques included releasing paint from saturated brushes, sticks and syringes onto large canvases which were laid on the ground.

When you enter the studio behind the Pollock/Krasner home, the first thing you must do is remove your shoes as the floor is perfectly preserved with the original splatters from Jackson’s paintings. This was by far the most impressive aspect of the museum. As you walk through, you are stepping on the remnants of some of the most important art pieces ever created! Through careful inspection, it has been determined the locations in which several pieces were created. If you study the floor you can see the edges where the canvases were lying.

In the back of the studio stands a case with paint buckets and painting tools left as they were when Jackson died. Also in the studio are cases preserving the tools and painting supplies used by both Jackson and Krasner. If you can appreciate art, this studio is a must see as it creates a feeling of unity between the viewer and the creator.

The museum also includes the home in which Lee Krasner and Jackson Pollock shared until his untimely death in a drunk driving accident in 1956. Lee stayed in the home taking up his space as her studio until her death in 1984. Lee also maintained a home and studio in New York City. The main house is almost like a time capsule into the life of these two brilliant artists.

The living rooms shelves perfectly preserved.

Drapery Window Treatment 101

Unless you are living under a rock, most likely you have windows in your living space and have been confronted with the decision on how to best dress them! There are many different types of window treatments to choose from considering the look you desire and the amount of coverage you need. Today we are going to explore the different types of drapery that can be used in your space.

Drapery is probably the most common type of window treatment. This type of window treatment is sold in panels and those panels have a constructed top portion which allows them to be hung from a drapery hardware rod. The constructed top might consist of pleats, tabs, attached rings, grommets, snaps, or other unusual headings.

Pinch Pleat

Traditional pinch pleats take three folds of fabric sewn together for a pleat that fans out on the top and bottom. It is also possible to do a single or double pinch pleat depending on your preference.

Goblet Pleat –

Tiny pleats are caught with a stitch several inches down from the top of the drape, creating a cup-shaped fabric poof.

Pencil Pleat –

Pencil-pleating tapes are sewn to the back with strings that cinch up the fabric into elongated pleats. Use this treatment for stationary panels only.

Box Pleat –

Box pleats are another beautifully tailored treatment for stationary panels.

Swags-

Swags are pieces of fabric loosely slung and draped over a decorative rod or wound over a tieback at each corner of a window frame to add a little style and softness in your room.

swags & Draperies

Tab Top-

A panel or valance with loops sewn to the top, which can be hung from a rod or pole.

Rod Pocket-

Any type of pole can be covered with rod-pocket panels. These are easy to make at home and can be detailed with ribbon or fabric borders, tassels, or tiebacks.

Eyelet –

Also called grommet curtains. This design is simple, casual and has been popular for a long time. With eyelet heading, you can adjust the width of your curtain easily.
